It is not uncommon for taxi drivers to rudely refuse passengers, avoid cross-harbor trips, or overcharge, but when it comes to aggressiveness, they are the foremost in Hong Kong, akin to the Korean farmers in 2005. The government has repeatedly delayed regulating Uber, and Gaode打车 has quietly entered the Hong Kong market, adding more complications and provoking several taxi groups to threaten a "do-or-die" strike, which ultimately became a laughingstock and required an apology to the public for the "negative perception" caused.
Taxi drivers have a history of aggressive protests; the rigid licensing system makes it difficult for the industry to adapt to the competition brought by the progress of the times. However, even if unlicensed vehicles are legalized in the future, it would not severely affect taxi drivers' livelihoods as it does abroad, so why fear it?
